In Hyderabad, amid controversy surrounding allegations of adulteration of the popular Tirupati laddu, artisans near Tirumala are preparing to seek a geographical indication tag for their Madhavamala wood carvings. These craftsmen have been creating intricately carved wooden statues of deities for over a century, including idols of gods and goddesses, dolls, toys, furniture, and more. The Sri Balaji Wood Carvings Mutually Aided Cooperative Society Limited, representing 510 artisans from 309 families, will be submitting the GI application with the support of NABARD. This will be the 20th GI application from Andhra Pradesh, guided by GI practitioner Subhajit Saha and NABARD.
